Grip

The three grips

Palm, claw or fingertip — this decides ergo vs ambi.

Grip decides which mouse shape fits you before specs do. Three styles, each with its own strength.

Key takeaways

  • Palm is steadiest and comfiest, but slowest for micro-adjusts and flicks.
  • Claw is the all-round default for tactical shooters.
  • Fingertip is most agile but tires fast without a palm anchor.

The three grips

Grip style is how your hand contacts the mouse. It decides which mouse shape fits you before you ever look at specs. Most players use a blend, but almost everyone leans toward one of three.

Palm — whole hand on the mouse

The entire palm rests on the shell, fingers flat on the buttons, heel of the hand on the rear. The hand is locked to the mouse and moves as one unit from the arm and wrist. Best with a large ergonomic shape that fills the palm and has a pronounced hump (think DeathAdder-style or Zowie EC). Most comfortable for long sessions and excellent for tracking and spray control — but the slowest for micro-adjustments and flicks. Favours large hands (over 19cm); medium hands work too.

Claw — fingers arched, palm lifted

Fingertips press the buttons at a steep angle, the knuckles bow upward, and only the palm heel touches the rear. The arched fingers act like a spring, so clicks are fast and control is balanced across tracking, flicks and micro-adjusts. The most versatile grip for tactical shooters. Suits medium hands (17–19cm) best and pairs with a medium ergo or symmetrical mouse with a moderate hump (GPX-style, Viper V3, Zowie ZA).

Fingertip — only the tips touch

Nothing but the fingertips contacts the mouse; the palm floats entirely. Maximum freedom and the fastest micro-adjusts and flicks, with the least hand weight holding you back. The trade-off is stability — there is no palm anchor, so fatigue and inconsistency creep in faster, and very low sensitivities are hard to hold. Natural fit for small hands (under 17cm) with a small, low-profile, light mouse (Viper Mini-style, Ultralight, Zowie S).

Which one is yours?

Big hands and long tracking (Apex, sustained sprays) → palm + ergonomic. Small hands and lots of flicks → fingertip + small symmetrical. Want a flexible middle ground → claw + symmetrical. There is no wrong answer; if it feels right after a week, it is right. Mixed grips (relaxed claw, pincer) are normal and need no forced label.
